Purge, Strands and Die Drool: Once Waste Turns Unexpected Profits
Problem / Opportunity:
A pharmaceutical bottle manufacturer generates amber purge, stands and die drool as manufacturing scrap. The material is burnt and discolored from sitting in the barrel and also has adhered cardboard (stray polymers, screen packs, nuts, bolts & screws). The plant had a company repelletize the material but the lot was rejected for carbon black specks. The pharmaceutical bottle application is appearance-critical.
Solution:
Butler-MacDonald tested samples of not only the purge, strands and die drool but also the other plastic scrap generated to tailor a comprehensive recovery solution. Butler-MacDonald was able to handle the amber purge, stands and die drool as well as contaminated amber regrind and offered volume pricing. Butler-MacDonald was able to return an amber reprocessed pellet that was approved at a 25% let down ratio.
Benefit to the Customer:
The pharmaceutical bottle manufacturer realized a 35% net gain in material costs. On occasion, the manufacturer accidentally mixes white scrap in with the amber scrap. Butler-MacDonald provides the quality assurance that the white color is separated along with the other contaminates.
